Starting Each Day with a Win!

Do you ever find yourself trying to get the desire to get out of bed in the morning?  That little voice inside of your head is saying, “Just five more minutes!”  That desire, or want to get out of bed, is the same as having a sense of purpose, or as the Japanese call it, “Ikigai”, or a reason for being.  This is what motivates us from our personal passions to the goals of fulfilling responsibilities or contributing to something larger than yourself.  United States Navy Admiral William H. McRaven is known for his motivational speech regarding 10 lessons he learned from basic Seal training.  I have always connected with his quote, “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”

The concept that every day we face challenges and obstacles that make us question our own worth has always resonated with me.  By making our bed every morning, we will have accomplished the first task of the day.  It encourages us to accomplish the next task and the next, and by the end of the day, that first task we accomplished turns into many more tasks completed.  It helps reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter.  If you can’t do the little things right, then you will never get the big things right.  And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made, that YOU made, and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will start better.  I believe that every day that we are given is a gift, and starting every day with a win will make champions of us all.

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
